Samenwerkingsovereenkomst AMP Terminals

Expansion of APM Terminals’ sustainable container terminal

We have reached an important milestone with APM Terminals Maasvlakte II and AECOM. Together, we have signed a joint venture agreement for the expansion of one of Europe’s most advanced container terminals. The on-site ceremony marked the official launch of an integrated construction project focused on increasing capacity, improving operational efficiency and developing a fully emission-free terminal. The first phase is scheduled for completion in early March 2026.

Design & build: an integrated approach to sustainability

The joint venture has been formalised through a design-build agreement, signed by Harold Kunst, CEO of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II. Under this agreement, Cordeel Nederland is responsible for the technical design and construction of various building components, while AECOM provides expertise in project management and sustainable infrastructure development. The design was developed in close collaboration with terminal stakeholders, elaborated by Haskoning and supervised by Arcadis throughout the permitting process.

This multidisciplinary approach ensures a future-proof expansion that aligns with APM Terminals’ operational and strategic ambitions.

Future-focused expansion

The expansion supports APM Terminals’ ambition to operate fully emission-free facilities. This will be achieved by:

  • Fully electrifying new facilities, eliminating the need for diesel
  • Optimising internal logistics to shorten travel distances and reduce energy use
  • Using sustainable materials and energy-efficient construction methods
  • Creating space for innovative maintenance processes that extend equipment lifespan

Strategic value for the Port of Rotterdam

The APM Terminals Maasvlakte II expansion is a key step in the company’s long-term strategy to strengthen its position as a sustainable and highly efficient logistics hub in Europe. By investing in modern infrastructure and partnering with leading organisations, APM Terminals is preparing for future growth, technological innovation and evolving customer needs.
